Hair Love

Written by Shelby Satcher

Hello beauties! Lets talk about hair! Throughout my life I have gone through a whole bunch to get my hair where I want it to be. I used to straighten and dye my hair often and everyone knows how bad that damages our locks.

  • Inside Health: Hair health starts on the INSIDE!!!! The best way to ensure your hair is at its best is by taking care of yourself. Eat your veggies and drink water people!!! Drink AT LEAST 8 glasses of water a day to not only hydrate your body but also hydrate your scalp and hair. Take vitamins such as biotin or even a daily pill. My fave hair, skin, and nail vitamin is Natures Bounty. Stick with me until the end because I will be listing all of the best hair products I have ever tried!! (I have tried A LOT)

Before we go into all the details lets talk about which hair type you are. The range of hair types is 1-4c. 1 being straight and 4c being the curliest.

  1. Straight hair. If you have straight hair then lucky you! your hair is the easiest to moisturize.
  2. Wavy hair- A) B) C)
  3. Curly hair- A) B) C)
  4. Coily hair- A) B) C) Unfortunately the hardest to moisturize.

By knowing what type of hair you have, you can properly take care of it. We are all unique as well as our hair, which is why one thing that worked for someone else wouldn’t work for the other..

We will start with type 1 hair: straight. here are some tips

  • Shampoo regularly. when you are not shampooing use a dry shampoo. people with straight hair have naturally oily hair and it can become very greasy if not properly washed.
  • Use the right brush. The best for straight hair is the paddle brush to help prevent breakage and tame frizz.
  • Do not brush/comb when wet. Wet hair is more elastic than dry, thus when brushing wet you are stretching the hair and causing breakage. The best solution is to wait until dry, use a wide tooth comb, or use your fingers to temporarily detangle while hair is wet.

Moving on to type 2 hair: wavy. here are some tips

  • Choose the right shampoo and conditioner. When choosing, go for a product that is for wavy to curly hair. Shampoo and conditioner for straight hair is not going to give your waves what they need.
  • Brush/comb as little as possible. as I said earlier, brushing when wet is the worst. If you have to brush your hair use a wide tooth comb. The best anti breakage brush i know of is the Wet Brush. the bristles are soft and don’t pull too hard on your hair.
  • Avoid excessive heating tools such as flat irons or curling irons. Once your hair is in the type 2-4 categories heat is your worst enemy. Hair that has any type of wave or curl is naturally drier and more coarse and heat only makes it worse.

Type 3 hair: curly. (my hair type) here are some tips

  • ALL the same tips as wavy hair plus a couple more.
  • Moisturize moisturize moisturize. Curly hair is naturally dry as I’ve said but why is it dry? Because it is harder for the natural oils from the scalp to disperse throughout the hair due to all the bumps and curves in the road (the curls) So, since we have a hard time getting moisture naturally we need to help our hair out. DRINK WATER, take vitamins, and add products to your hair. (I will be listing the best products I’ve used at the bottom)
  • Do not shampoo too often. Shampooing strips your hair of its natural oils. The best way is to shampoo once or twice a week. I know that sounds gross but that doesn’t mean not to shower it just means don’t always use shampoo. I will still get my hair wet and condition it on my no shampoo days. Or you can get a co-wash.

Last but certainly not least, type 4 hair: coils/kinky

  • Sulfate free shampoo. It is needed because sulfates dry out the hair. Only use regular shampoo when it is time for a deep cleaning.
  • Shampoo the scalp and not the ends. This prevents tangles and drying out your ends. When you condition condition the ends well. Less tangle=less brushing=less breakage.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner after washing.  this will help lock in the moisture in your hair.
